Trolls are short, surly creatures who prefer solitude to associating with any of the other races, even each other. Those trolls that choose to live near established settlements do so only to profit from passers-by. Rather than outright robbery, trolls prefer to extort money from travelers by imposing a "toll" over a nearby road or bridge.

Trolls live out the majority of their lives alone, driving away potential acquaintances with their prickly personalities and poor hygiene. Ironically, however, their sub par grooming habits tend to attract the one companion that most trolls will know in their lives: a species of "beard bird" that nests within a troll's beard and subsists on a diet of food provided by the troll's sloppy eating habits.
