'My cage opened and I was dragged roughly to the middle of the Gnarl camp where the entire clan waited in a circle, howling like mad. I looked up and saw the giant, snarling Gnarl Marauder who stood before me; armed to the teeth and grinning evilly. I staggered to my feet, gripped my club, and awaited the now charging Marauder. It was going to be one of those days.' - Digriz, "Digriz and the Gnarl King"

Charge!

Gnarls are a primitive tribal race that live in highland and mountainous areas. They appear to be some cross between a dog and a man, and possess many canine-like qualities such as growling, biting, and hunting. They tend not to be distracted by sticks either, so you can forget about that idea.

Although generally quite vicious, their temperament varies from tribe to tribe. Some are largely insular and choose to live in relative peace in their ancestral mountain homes. Others enjoy the prospect of endless war with whoever gets in their way.

Gnarls and Combat

Originally from the mountains to the south, Gnarls have spread out in recent years and have been sighted around the Wandering Plains, and human settlements such as Four Farms and Shoal. Gnarls always travel in packs so you can bet that the moment you have one pinned two more are nearby, waiting for a chance to pounce.

They are also semi-intelligent. Adventurers who underestimate their shaman's magic powers usually wind up with "Didn't think a dog could conjure a fireball" written on their gravestone.
